We’re kicking off the New Year in style – celebrating the best in British wayfinding. All three finalists from the British Sign Awards 2018 wayfinding category will join us to talk through the brief, challenges and inspiration behind their winning projects:
- CCD Design & Ergonomics will present their solution to the challenges experienced by visitors to the newly extended National Maritime Museum.
- Maynard will discuss the development of the temporary and permanent wayfinding systems for London Bridge Station.
- Placemarque will tell us about their innovative design for the Ireland Ancient East wayfinding project.
About this event
The themes of exploration and discovery are central to the National Maritime Museum. With the opening of four new galleries in September 2018 (and an architectural footprint that resulted in many visitors being unaware of displays on the first and second floors), CCD were tasked with creating solutions that encouraged visitors to explore and be inspired by maritime adventurers. Designers Chris Girling and Darren Clarke will discuss how they used ethnographic research to uncover the challenges, as well as the inspiration for the design of the bold, colourful wayfinding system that followed.
Moving large numbers of passengers in a dynamic and fast paced environment is a complex challenge, but keeping people moving when that environment is constantly evolving poses an even greater test. Hayley Branston from Maynard will give an overview of the background to the London Bridge Station wayfinding project, and discuss the key issues and outcomes for both the temporary and final wayfinding system.
The aim of Ireland’s Ancient East orientation and wayfinding project is to encourage visitors to explore the diverse range of historical and cultural heritage experiences found in the East and South of Ireland. Sue Manley will take us through how Placemarque responded to the themes and vision of the IAE brand, taking references from the local environment, to develop a distinctive sign form that invites visitors to explore the wider tourism offer. The result is a contemporary and unique suite of signs that sit well in an open landscape, at a historic building or in a busy town centre location,
