Places with purpose do better: the role of place branding

Wednesday 9 October 2019
Black & white photo of dn&co.'s Simon Yewdall

About this event

Have you ever looked at your surroundings and wondered why so much of it looks the same? Many of the places that surround us were designed by committee with only shareholders in mind. But sometimes it happens differently. And when it does, those places feel great. We want to come back to them again and again. That’s because those places were built with purpose.

Join us at our October event to hear guest speaker Simon Yewdall, Lead Strategist at dn&co. talk about place branding, what it is, and why it is needed. He will share some insights into dn&co.’s work for Digbeth in Birmingham, the Royal Docks in London and St James’s. He will explain what good place branding looks like, setting out the emotional and economic reasons the world of brand can help places change their perception.

About our speaker

dn&co. formed over ten years ago as a design agency working exclusively with the architecture industry. Since then they have developed into a brand consultancy that helps create meaningful places, with a team and clients who are dedicated to defeating the seemingly inexorable rise of easy monoculture. Underpinning all their work is an interest in creating places with purpose.

Simon Yewdall – Lead Strategist, dn&co. – has a keen sense of how brands and places communicate. In his role at dn&co, he has shaped the tone of voice and brand strategy for some of London’s most remarkable areas including Broadgate, the Royal Docks and Ilford. Simon is a proponent of the power of place journalism, and established and ran the St James’s Correspondent as Editor-in-Chief, a publication with a 40,000 circulation dedicated to this central London area. He also founded Amuseum Magazine which looks at the world through the story of one-off objects.

Simon has degrees in geography and illustration, and a love of the practice of psycho-geography that once led him on a long ramble from London to The Netherlands. With Joy Nazzari, Simon is co-author of place branding book, Know Your Place.
